The Southwest Section supports tennis enthusiasts throughout Arizona, New Mexico and El Paso County. Our mission is to promote and develop tennis in the Southwest. We offer USTA league play for adults, tournaments for juniors and adults, and we award thousands of dollars a year in scholarships to juniors, adults and special needs players in the Southwest Section. Sampras, Querrey Make Albuquerque 'Pit' Stop, Sept. 12

Pete Sampras and Sam Querrery will be making a one-night "Pit' stop for an exhibition on the campus of the University of New Mexico, Sept. 12. The 14-time Grand Slam champion Sampras will be making his first ever appearance at 'The Pit' in Albuquerque. Read this article from the Albuquerque Journal for details on the exhibition, including a ticket presale event that runs July 6-13.

Albuquerque Hosts Section's First QuickStart Tennis Matches

Nearly 40 kids from the city of Albuquerque and surrounding areas took part in the USTA Southwest's first official QuickStart Tennis Team Tournament at Tennis Club of Albuquerque (TCA) on Friday, June 27. The youngsters, ages 10 and under, came from six different clubs in the city, and played against one another on modified 36' courts with modified scoring formats and equipment.

Letzt, Nguyen, Dunn Capture National Open Titles

Phoenix-area juniors Alexandra Letzt, Garret Dunn, and Andy Nguyen recently captured titles at USTA National Open events held the week of June 28-July 2. Letzt won the Girls 12 singles crown in Omaha, Neb., while Nguyen picked up the singles and doubles championships (with Dunn) at the Boys 18 event in Denver, Colo.

Juniors Heat up Tucson at USTA Southwest Closed

The Southwest Section’s top junior tennis talent was on display in mid-June as 350 boys and girls rolled into Tucson, Ariz. for the USTA Southwest Junior Closed Championships presented by Head/Penn Racquet Sports. More than 765 total matches were played over the course of four days at the three host sites – Hilton El Conquistador Resort and Country Club, Tucson Racquet Club and Randolph Tennis Center. Double event winners included Andy Nguyen, Emily Harris, Courtney Amos and Nathan Ponwith.

Raven Romero Awarded USTA Tennis & Education Scholarship

Raven Romero, a recently graduated senior from Robertson High School in Las Vegas, N.M., was awarded a $6,000 scholarship as one of 54 national USTA Tennis & Education Foundation (USTA T&EF) scholarship winners. The USTA T&EF awards college education scholarships annually to high school seniors who have excelled academically, demonstrated community service and participated in an organized tennis program.

Cheney To Play Super Senior World Championships in Turkey

Longtime Phoenix-area teaching pro and multiple gold ball winner Brian Cheney will represent the United States at the 2008 ITF Super Seniors World Team Championships in Antalya, Turkey, in Mid-October. Cheney, currently ranked No. 3 in the world in Men's 60's singles, will lead Team USA's pursuit of a Von Cramm Cup title.

Bronson Finishes Fourth, Shank Fifth at Women's 50 Indoors

Scottsdale's Sherri Bronson finishes fourth in both women's singles and doubles at the USTA Women's 40 and 50 Indoors in early June at the Wimbledon Racquet Club in Saint Claire Shores, Mich. Goodyear, Ariz. resident Eve Shank also had a strong tournament, winning the backdraw in singles to finish in fifth place.

First-Serve, an organizational member of the USTA Southwest recently received a $20,000 'Aces for Kids' grant from the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation to assist with the Santa Fe, New Mexico-based organization's efforts at expanding their program offerings.
