Eight different schools were a part of the 2011 Wildcat Winter Classic held at the Jim Reffkin Tennis Center, January 29-30, making it one of the largest Tennis on Campus events in the Southwest.
With the Section championships just two weeks away, the Wildcat offered a great tune-up for teams participating in the Southwest event, as well as a chance to network with some new, out-of-state schools. The two-day Tennis on Campus invitational event hosted by the University of Arizona, attracted the major programs in the Southwest lineup (Arizona, Arizona State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, University of Texas-El Paso, Northern Arizona) as well as two schools from outside the Southwest, University of Utah and the University of Colorado.
The eight schools splitting up their own full squads and combined into four total flights to maximize play and give everyone a chance, but when the dust settled, the final round was an all-Arizona affair with ASU and Arizona battling it out. The Sundevils (pictured, above) prevailed in the finals, edging their biggest rival with a 28-21 final-round decision.
Third place went to University of Arizona’s #2 squad, outpacing UTEP by a 24-20 team score.
The format for the event is World TeamTennis style short sets in men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles and mixed.
A special player’s party was held at Old Pueblo Grille near the Reffkin Tennis Center, with free food and a cash bar for participants on Saturday, Jan. 29. A fun, ping pong tournament was also held.
Section teams are gearing up for the Tennis on Campus Championships – Southwest, which will be held Feb. 18-20 at Scottsdale Ranch Park in Scottsdale, Ariz.
