Adam Knox (Hilton El Conquistador - 18's Advanced) goes up for a serve at the 2008 STA Southwest Jr. Team Tennis Section Championships.
USTA Jr. Team Tennis (JTT) is a grassroots community level tennis program that is marketed to boys and girls ages 6 to 18. The philosophy of the program is fun, fitness, and friends in an environment that stresses sportsmanship and socialization in a team tennis atmosphere.
The skill divisions are broken down using a rating system designed for coaches, players and parents to rate their own children. Leagues are led by volunteer Area League Coordinators that organize and handle all of the local registrations for the participants in the community. USTA Jr. Team Tennis is a great recreational program where players of all skill levels can play with, or against, their friends in a low-key competitive environment.
USTA Jr. Team Tennis is a program of team practice and match play for boys and girls, ages 6 to 18, who want to play on tennis teams. Teams are comprised of players from similar age and skill levels, and they compete against other teams from the same area in one of three league divisions: 18 & under, 14 & under, and 12 & under and three skill levels: beginner/advanced beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Divisions are also forming in the 10-and-under and 8-and-under divisions using the QuickStart Tennis Format. For more information on QuickStart, click HERE.
Jr. Team Tennis participants get involved in a healthy, active sport and they stay involved, because they're part of a team, connecting in a co-ed, social environment while honing their tennis skills. As a result, they learn more than just a sport they can participate in forever. They learn the importance of teamwork while having fun with their friends. Parents are encouraged to help out and become active with their child's participation in the JTT program, much like baseball Little League teams do.
Melissa Kahn (L) and Delaney Nothaft (R) of the Ahwatukee Tennis Club (Ahwatukee, Ariz.) enjoy fun, friendship and fitness with Jr. Team Tennis.
Not that there isn't a competitive component. There's plenty of competition too! Participants do have the opportunity to advance to local, section, and even national competition. Players in the Intermediate and Advanced Divisions compete for the opportunity to represent the USTA Southwest each year at the USTA Jr. Team Tennis National Championships.
