EL PASO, TEXAS - Some of the best female tennis players in the world will head to El Paso’s Tennis West Sports and Racquet Club, as the 2008 Hunt Communities USTA Women’s Pro Tennis Classic gets underway June 9-15.
One of the longer tenured events on the women’s USTA Pro Circuit, the event will mark its 13th consecutive year in El Paso in 2008. This year the event also received an upgrade in status, moving to the $25,000 level, meaning higher ranked players on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour are eligible to participate.
Singles qualifying begins on Sunday, June 8, with main draw play in both singles and doubles beginning on Tuesday June 10.
This year’s field at the 2008 Hunt Communities USTA Women’s Pro Tennis Classic is headed by 18-year old American Lauren Albanese. Ranked No. 246 at press time, she was the highest ranked committed player on the entry list. University of Texas-El Paso player Weronika Bloczynska received a wild card, and will give the tournament a local presence.
In total, the USTA Pro Circuit offers more than $3 million in prize money and will put on approximately 95 men's and women's events in the United States in 2008. Many of the world's major tennis stars, including Justine Henin, Andy Roddick and Maria Sharapova, have come up through the USTA Pro Circuit on their way to ATP and WTA Tour careers.
