The USTA and TIA recently announced that tennis participation in the United States topped 30 million players for the first time in more than two decades. With 30.1 million people hitting the courts, tennis participation has grown 12% over 2008 and climbed 25% since 2003. The survey is conducted annually by the Taylor Research Group on behalf of the Tennis Industry Association (TIA) and the USTA.

Varvara Lepchenko hit a groove like no other in winning her final three matches at the $50K Goldwater Women's Classic, a USTA Pro Circuit event held Nov. 8-15 at Phoenix Country Club. Lepchenko won the last 30 games she played, dominating her opposition for the crown.

The USTA recently announced that USTA Central Arizona in Scottsdale, Ariz., has been awarded a Community Partnership Investment Grant (CPI). The grant, in the amount of $28,000 to help build and strengthen local tennis programming in the Phoenix-metropolitan area.

Jim Reffkin and his lifelong contributions to the City of Tucson's tennis community and the sport of tennis overall, was honored on Saturday, September 26th, 2009 with a dedication ceremony renaming the Randolph Tennis Center in his name. Over the past 34 years, he has served as the Director of Tennis for the City of Tucson's Parks & Recreation Department and the Randolph Tennis Center.

The USTA recently announced that it has awarded the Southern Arizona Tennis Association with the 2008 Recreational Coaches Workshop Host Site of the Year award.,and Tom Fey, Director of Tennis at Indian Wells Tennis Garden with the 2008 USTA Recreational Coaches Workshop Trainer of the Year Award. Both recipients were recognized at the third annual awards ceremony hosted by the USTA Tennis Teachers Conference during the 2009 US Open.
