The Bisbee Community Tennis Association (BCTA) has been in existence for almost two decades, helping to encourage interest and promote participation in the sport in this tiny town of just over 6,000 in Southeastern Arizona.

With active and enthusiastic volunteers giving selflessly of their time and energy, and a host of fun events held throughout the year, Bisbee has made tennis a huge part of its identity, proving big things in tennis can come from small towns.

Almost all of the town's tennis activity centers around the Fred Corrin Tennis Courts at Vista Park, a public facility. The four hard courts are actually named after a longtime BCTA member, Fred Corrin, who still helps out with BCTA activities.  High school tennis is also strong in Bisbee, as the city has fielded several high school championship teams for both boys and girls over the last few years. The Bisbee High School coaches Bill Thomas and Jim Thursby - also BCTA board members - serve as volunteer coaches and even as practice partners for the team.

Ten and Under Tennis has taken off the last two years in Bisbee, thanks to a community tennis grant from USTA Southwest which allowed BCTA to purchase racquets, balls and nets. The city held a Recreational Coaches Workshop last year that was well attended and has really jumpstarted interest in both coaching and playing.

The summer program this year has grown to 70 participants with the addition of a group of kids from a local Boys and Girls Club. That number may sound modest, but when considering the population of Bisbee, it is truly incredible. The summer sessions are FREE of charge - and kids are provided with racquets.

BCTA also holds a Thursby Invitational Tournament for the high schools in the region in March, holds adult clinics regularly, and the last two years Jr. Team Tennis kids have represented the BCTA in the city's Fourth of July Parade (see picture below).

BCTA has also gotten creative with fundraising, using a 50-50 raffle to raise funds at the Bisbee 1000 Stair Cllmb, a well-known 10K race held each October. That little bit of ingenuity raised almost $700 for this summer's 10 and Under program.

The Bisbee Community Tennis Association also has dived into school tennis programs in Bisbee for elementary and high school kids. The best part? The 30-member BCTA has EVERY single volunteer participate in the coaching of high school and elementary school kids.

We are really proud to call you this month's featured USTA Southwest organization member and hope we see more great things coming out of Bisbee tennis.
