The Ellis Tennis Center is this month's featured Organizational Member, and is also our newly-named 2012 USTA Southwest Organizational Member of the Year.
Formerly the El Paso Youth Tennis Center, the club was on the verge of closing down in early 2011, before a dedicated group of USTA Greater El Paso volunteers, along with the Xplora Sports Management team that now oversees the facility, worked to find a solution.
The place was completely renovated in 2011 and officially reopened in October of last year as the Bill Ellis Tennis Center. This crown jewel of El Paso now includes 22 US Open blue courts (all lit), as well as a dedicated 10 and Under exhibition court, but that's not all.
Walk through the doors of the facility and the history of the sport is immediately thrust upon you with colorfully-decorative murals that adorn the walls.
Yet another cool amenity for fans and players is located in the facility lounge area, where there are cameras showcasing 12 of the facility's 22 courts. The cameras are trained on the court so fans can beat the heat by sitting in air-conditioned comfort to take in matches.
The tennis center is located in the northeast part of El Paso and has always been a supporter of USTA programming, home to USTA Leagues, Jr. Team Tennis, adult and junior events as well as high school play.
Besides being named this year's USTA Southwest Organizational Member of the Year, the center was also recently recognized at a national level by the USTA, as a 2012 Outstanding Facility Award winner in the large club category.
Congratulations to the BIll Eliis Tennis Center and thanks for all you do to support USTA programs in El Paso.
